Tihua Street

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Popular gathering place with room to roam, a fountain, and a man-made pond with pagoda. The memorial to the father of the Republic of China houses an impressive bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen an photos from his life and times. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Buses : 31, 212, 232, 235, 240, 254, 259, 263, 266, 270, 281, 282, 299, 504, Chungsiao Line.

Lungshan Temple
This is one of the best Taipei temples to see. Exchange the intricately carved stone dragon pillars, roof and eaves. Watch the devout worship a variety of ancient gods. Visit nearby Huahsi Street Night Market. Buses : 0 West, 9, 24, 25, 38, 49, 62, 231, 234, 264, 310, 601.

Presidential Office Building
A short walk from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. The Plaza in front of where the huge annual parades are held to celebrate the Oct. 10 national Day. The Presidential Office Building faces the massive East Gate, one of five bult as part of Taipei's original citywall. Buses : 0 South, 0 West, 3, 5, 38, 204, 235, 236, 241, 243, 251, 252, 270.

Taiwan Provincial Museum
The museum contains biological specimens and minerals, as well as life-size statues of Taiwan's aboriginal tribes and their handicrafts. Located near the Taipei Railway Station. Buses : 0 South, 0 West, 20, 48, 222, 232, 236, 241, 243, 245, 249, 251, 259, 263, 504, 605.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
Majestic marble monument surrounded by landscaped gardens, placid ponds; popular garthering place. Location of National Theater and Concert Hall. A ground - level library displays photos and mementos of the late president's life. Buses : 0 East, 15, 22, 38, 48, 70, 204, 208, 209, 236, 237, 242, 248, 249, 251, 252, 253, 263, 270, 274, 294, Hsinyi Line.

National museum of History
The National Museum of History, in a corner of the beautiful Botanical Garden, has a collection of priceless relics which almost rivals that of the National Palace Museum. Buses : 0 West, 1, 204.

Chinese handicraft Mart
The Chinese Handicraft Mart (No.1 Hsuchow Rd.) has a wide variety of inexpensive mementos that appeal to tourists. Buses : 5, 18, 37, 216, 217, 222, 227, 268, 269, 615, Hsinyi Line.

Kungkuan Night Market
Bargains on clothes, used books. Fast food, restaurants, bakeries, and cinemas. Buses : 0 South, 1, 10, 30, 52, 60, 74, 208, 236, 251, 252, 253, 254, 278, 280, 290, 311, 505, 606.

Confucius Temple
An excellent example of traditional Chinese architecture and immaculately landscaped gardens. A lovely, serene place to relax or chat with friends. Buses ; 0 North, 2, 24, 41, 201, 246, 250, 288.

Holiday Jade Market
Open Saturday afternoons and Sundays. Rows of vendors offering bargains on trinkets and treasures of jade and other materials. The adjacent Holiday Flower Market features a mile of flowers, plants, and all the trimmings. Buses : 36, 37, 48, 65, 226, 263, 270, 274.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum
Modern art fills the 24 galleries of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Buses : 21, 40, 42, 47, 203, 208, 213, 216, 217, 218, 220, 224, 247, 260, 269, 277, 287, 308, 310.

All types of restaurants, cuisines, department stores and boutiques, cinemas, bakeries, book shops, art galleries, and more! Some good deals on clothes and trinkets in the area's maze of alleys. Buses : 0 East, 31, 204, 212, 232, 240, 259, 261, 262, 278, 281, 299, 504, Chunghstao Line.

World of Yesterday
Re-created traditional village. Displays of ancient lifestyles offer fascinating glimpses of Chinese history and culture. Folk arts demonstrations on Sundays and holidays. Closed Mondays. Across from the Taipei Fine Art Museum.

Taipei World Trade Center
The heart of Taiwan's international business, and the first stop of knowledge able businessmen. Martyrs Shrine
An excellent example of classical Ming dynasty architecture, dedicated to the fallen heroes of China's wars. Majestic archway, tranquil paths, and interesting hourly changing of the guard. Buses : 21, 42, 208, 213, 247, 267, 287.

Chinese Culture & Movie Center
Near the famed National palace Museum. The Culture and Movie center is built like a town from old China with reconstructions of buildings from different dynasties. This is where movies are actually made. Buses : 213, 255, 267, 304.

National Palace Museum
World's largest collection of Chinese art, spanning China's 5,000-year history. Treasures from the ancient imperial collection include jade, porcelain, paintings, bronzes, and more. Pieces on display changed regularly. Tea room, gift shop, gardens, pavilions. Daily guided tours in Chinese and English languages. Buses : 213, 255, 304.


Lin An-tai House

Ching dynasty-era family home offers rare look into China's past. Intricate stone and wood carvings complement the graceful, classical Chinese architecture. Free admission. Closed Mondays. Buses : 33, 72, 74, 203, 279, 280.

Hsingtien Temple
Home to the God of War and other deities, an interesting place to see age-old worship and intricate temple architecture. Buses : 5, 41, 49, 54, 63, 72, 74, 214, 222, 225, 277, 280, 283, 286, 298, 502.

Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy
This training school for traditional Chinese opera performers and acrobats opens its doors to visitors each Monday, Thursday, and Saturday morning for introductions to this fascinating performing art, a short stage show, and a campus and museum tour. Buses : 247, 287.

Sungshan (Jaoho St.) Night market
Great place for local. Handicrafts, clothes, toys, tapes and CDs, tasty local snacks, eletric gadgets, and souvenirs. Buses : 28, 51, 53, 53, 63, 203, 205, 257, 276, 286, 306, 311, 605.

Lin Family Gardens
Taiwan's finest example of classical Chinese-style landscaping, with exquisite pavilions, towers, cottages, bridges, and ponds. Closed Mondays. Admission is NT$60. In the Panchiao suburb, about 10 minutes by train from Taipei; Buses : 264, 307, 310.

Chih Nan Temple
Nicknamed "Temple of a Thousand Steps," this temple, perched high on th slopes of Monkey Mountain, offers fine views of Taipei Basin, and interesting traditional worship. Near the zoo in the suburb of Mucha, Half-an-hour from Taipei. City buses : 236, 237. Chihnan bus : 1, 2.

Taipei City Zoo
Taipei's huge new zoo, in the rolling hills of suburban Mucha, is one of the largest in Asia and is comparable to San Diego's world-famous zoo. Animals from around the world live in humane "natural" habitats with relative freedom of movement behind low walls or deep ditches. Cages are employed only for agile, ferocious, or flighty residents. Open 9 to 5 daily. Buses : 236, 258, 282, 291; Culture Buses : 11, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.

Yangmingshan National Park
This massive mountainous park on the outskirts of Taipei has waterfalls, volcanic craters, hot springs, and abundant wildlife. Cherry and azalea blossoms in spring and cool, fresh air in summer are added attractions. Hiking trails, picnic and recreation facilities available. Buses : 230, 260.

Kuantu Nature Park
The Kuantu Marsh, just northwest of Taipei, is a favorite rest of Asia's migratoty birds. Located where the Keelung and tamsui rivers meet; the best time for bird watching is at low tide. Observation stations have been set up along the perimeter of the bird sanctuary to facilitate bird watching. Buses : 223, 302, Chihnan 2, Chihnan 5.

Yingko
The tiny town of Yingko is Taiwan's pottery center. Scores of shops offer an endless variety of porcelain, from simple earth enware tea sets to delicate, hand-painted replicas of Ming and Ching dynasty vases. Some factories offer free tours. Yingko is 30 minutes to an hour southwest of Taipei by car, bus, or train. An easy half-or full-day trip.

Wulai
Wulai is an aborigine enclave where visitors can witness the traditional dances and ceremonies of Taiwan's Atayal tribe or enjoy the beautiful waterfall cascading through lush vegetation. About an hour's drive south of Taipei.

Tamsui
An ancient fort, fresh seafood, reasonably priced antiques, and beautiful sunsets make the quaint seaside town of Tamsui a popular day trip from Taipei.

Yehliu
The rock formations at Yehliu (Wild Willows) are an amazing array of artistic shapes created by erosion and other natural forces. Restaurants, dolphin and seal shows, snack and souvenir vendors. On the coast west of Keelung, an hour's drive from Taipei.

Keelung
The landmark 74-foot (23-meter) white statue of Kuanyin, Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, crowns a hilltop park overlooking the harbor. Windows inside the hollow statue offer interesting views. Taiwanese snacks and desserts make Miaokou (Temple Mouth) Keelung's most popular dining spot. Keelung is a 40-minute drive northeast of Taipei.

Northeast Coast National Scenic Area
This national Scenic Area is noted for its natural beauty : reefs, rivers, terraced tice paddies, rolling green hills, lighthouses, and two of Taiwan's best beaches. Recreation includes camping, rock climbing, hiking along a 200-year-old footpath, and water sports. Information centers at Fulung and Yenliao beaches. Convenient by bus or train; just southeast of Keelung.

Chiufen
Located up in the hills of northeast Taiwan, Chiufen was referred to as the "gold capital of Asia" in the 1930s. With the aura of an old mining town still apparent, Chiufen once again began to receive wide spread attention. One and half hour's drive from Taipei.

Sanhsia
The main attraction in the bustling old town of Sanhsia, a short distance from Yingko, is a temple which was originally built in 1770. The temple is known for its intricately carved stone and bronze columns and statues, carved stone lions, camphor wood carvings, and exquisite bronze bas-reliefs. A tour of the temple takes an hour or two.

Window on China
An hour south of Taipei, you can tour China's Great Wall and Peking's Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven all in one stop. The places is Window on China, which has 90 perfect mainature reproductions of the best known structures in both Taiwan and mainland China. Window on China also has a classical Chinese garden, restaurants, snack bars, a tea house, and souvenir shops.
