| Hong Kong is geographically compact and
boasts one of the worlds most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent
public transport system. Buses : Double-decker buses, which run from 6am till midnight, cover most parts of the territory. All are relatively inexpensive, with fares ranging from HK$ 1.2 to HK$ 45. The fare is paid on entering the bus; exact fare is required. Minibuses are yellow with a red stripe. These pick up passengers and let them off anywhere along a designated route except at double-decker bus stops and in restricted areas. A sign on the front (some with the English version below) indicates the final destination. Fares in urban areas usually range from HK$1.5 to $18. Pay as you alight; change is given. Maxicabs are yellow with a green stripe. These run specific routes and have fixed prices ranging from HK$ 2 to HK$20, depending on the distance traveled. A sigh on the front indicates the destination. Pay the exact fare as you get on. Taxi : Taxis are also plentiful and getting around town is generally quick and easy. As in all major cities, however, it is best to avoid rush house (08:00am-10:00am and 05:00pm-07:00pm) Mass Transit Railway (MTR) : Clean, fast and efficient, its mostly underground air-conditioned trains run along the north coast of Hong Kong Island and across the harbour where the route splits into east and west lines in Kowloon. Kowloon Canton Railway (KCR) East Rail : This electrified train system runs from Kowloon into the New Territories to Lo Wu, the boundary with mainland China. Fares for ordinary class range from HK$3.50to$9 ($33 to Lo Wu). Light Rail (LR) : This train system connects the New Territories towns of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long. Airport Express (AEL) : This high-speed rail service takes passengers from the airport to Hong Kong Station in the Central business district in just 23 minutes, including two stops on route. Travel time to Kowloon Station is around 19 minutes. Trains operate from 6am to 1am daily, at 10-minute intervals. Ferry : The famous Star Ferry crosses the harbour between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui daily from 6:30am to 11:30pm. Other ferries, including high-speed ferries, provide regular services to the New Territories, the Outlying Islands, mainland China and Macau. Tram : Trams have been trundling east-west across Hong Kong Island since 1904. The double-deckers are a great way to see the sights at a slow place. Peak Tram : The first funicular railway in Asia has been modernized into one of the most advanced train systems in the world. Climbing up Victoria Peak in just eight minutes. |
