Cologne Information
2,000 Years of Culture on the Rhine :
Cologne is distinctive and original, a city with its own dialect, its own mentality and a merry twinkle in its eye - and not just during its famous carnival! Cologne is the twin-spired cathedral, the Rhine and great art. It is 2,000-year-old Roman sites, mighty Romanesque churches, medieval houses, lively shopping streets, super-modern architecture, museums and art galleries. A centre of business and the media and a major trade fair venue. Cologners abroad always feel homesick - something that visitors to the city can easily understand.

Sights :

Cathedral : Germany's biggest cathedral, took 600 years to complete
Romanesque churches: Unique ensemble of 12 great Romanesque churches in the inner city (5 -13C)

Roman Cologne : Towers and gates, Praetorium (governer's palace), many important excavations
Medieval Town Hall, Gürzenich building & city gates from Cologne's hey-day (13-15C)

Kölner Philharmonie : One of Europe's top concert halls, around 400 events every year
Köln Arena : Completed 1998, Germany's biggest indoor stadium

Imhoff-Stollwerck Chocolate Museum: Everything you ever wanted to know about chocolate - history, technology and samples on 3 stories in a stunning new building on the Rhine

Rheingarten and Old Town : Meeting-place for locals and tourists, many traditional brewery pubs

Musical Dome : Next to the central station, currently venue for the musical "Saturday Night Fever"

Tips for Art-Lovers :
Cologne is a major centre of the art world and venue of the international Art Cologne fair. Countless art galleries and over 30 outstanding museums, including the Museum Ludwig (modern art), the Wallraf-Richartz Museum (14-19C art), the Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Roman and Germanic history) and the Schnütgen Museum (6-19C religious art). Regular top international exhibitions and musical events.

Excursions :
Cologne is the ideal starting-place for romantic cruises on the Rhine. Also popular: rail and bus tours to Bonn, Düsseldorf, the Brühl palaces and the lovely countryside of the Eifel and the Ahr valley. Brussels and Amsterdam are also just a short trip from Cologne.

Shopping :
Downtown Cologne has something for every taste and budget. Countless excellent shops and Germany's longest roofed shopping mall.

Cologne - Getting There :
Located in the centre of western Europe, Cologne is very easily accessible no matter what means of transport you prefer. Outstanding transport infrastructure, including two major airports (Cologne/ Bonn 20 min. bus transfer, D?sseldorf 55 min. bus transfer), ten autobahns, 1,200 train services daily and, of course, Father Rhine.
