Manchester Information
Manchester has come a long way since it was the centre of the North of England cotton and coal industry. Even today, the original canals that took barges laden with products from Manchester to Leeds and Liverpool still exist, although now they are predominately used for leisure.

Many Cafe bars, Restaurants, Theatres and Concert halls (such as the Bridgewater Hall opposite) have paved the way to the diverse culture and cuisine that can be found on the streets today.

Shopping - Anybody wishing to shop in Manchester will find an abundance of retail & fashion outlets. These are all located, and easily accessible, within a 1 mile radius of St. Peter's Square (opposite). There is a wide variety of fashion outlets starting with shops and stalls (where clothing is sold for under £10) to Italian designer wear, found on the exclusive King Street.

Getting Around
By Foot :
Unlike many major cities of the world, Manchester city centre is surprisingly accessible by foot. It takes no longer than 10-15 minutes to walk from one side of the city centre to the other...

For example, to walk from the G/MEX- Bridgewater Hall area of the city centre in the South to the Albert Square/Town Hall central area takes no more than 5 minutes by foot. From the Albert Square, moving further north towards the Arndale Shopping Centre takes a further 5-7 minutes by foot. From the Arndale Centre to the Nynex Arena takes about another 5 minutes by foot.

In 1998 the streets of Manchester are clean and virtually crime free in our experience... You are unlikely to run into any trouble unless you go looking for it! But be careful and vigilant at night if crossing the city on foot... Stay on the main streets, or better still, get a tram or taxi if you can afford the fare...

By Tram :
The city of Manchester hosts one of the newest tram sysems in Europe.

To travel from one end of the line at Bury to the other end at Altrincham currently costs £5.50 for a return fare (3.7.98) at peak travel times, and £4 for a return fare off peak.

PEAK travel times: before 9.30 AM
OFF PEAK travel times: after 9.30 AM

The first trams run from 6 AM Monday -Saturday and from 10 PM on Sundays.

Manchester trams run every 6 minutes (Mon-Fri 7.30AM-6PM, Sat 9.30AM-5.30PM), So arriving on spec at a tram station will mean you have an average wait of just 3 minutes for the next tram to arrive.

On Sundays the trams run at 15 minute intervals before 10AM and after 5PM. Between those hours Sunday trams run every 12 minutes.

You must be in possession of a valid ticket, pass or permit before boarding a tram.

You must retain your ticket for the duration of your journey and until you leave the station of your final destination.
Daily tickets can be purchased from ticket vending machines at all stations. These machines do not accept copper coins or notes but do give change.

Daily tickets are only valid on the date purchased.
Single ticket journeys must be completed within 90 minutes.

The outward journey of a return ticket must be completed within 90 minutes. The return journey may be made at any time ON THE SAME DAY.

By Taxi :
It's quite difficult to spend more than £5 on a taxi which will take you from one side of the city to the other...
The initial charge for 'black-cabs' in the city centre is £1.20 with 20 pence added for each additional passenger. The bill rises in 10 pence increments for each third of a mile travelled.

With the city centre spread over a 3 mile diameter, you can figure out that the average taxi fare around the city is between £3-£4. A taxi from the city centre to Manchester Airport currently costs about £9.80 in average traffic conditions.

There has been a public library service in Manchester since 1852, when the Manchester Free Library was opened in the Hall of Science in Campfield. Transportation
Getting There & Away :
Manchester airport is the largest outside London - a great excuse to avoid Heathrow. The airport services 35 destinations, including some flights from North America and Asia. National Express coaches stop off at the airport en route to the brutalist bus depot in Chorlton St (20 minutes), and head to Liverpool (60 minutes) and Leeds (80 minutes) every hour; the bus trip to London is almost five hours.

Piccadilly is the city's main station for intercity trains to places like London, Glasgow and Newcastle (all three hours); the trip to Liverpool takes a ridiculous 60 minutes. Manchester is a three-hour drive from London, 200mi/322km miles away to the south. Its neighbour and rival Liverpool is half an hour and 35mi/56km away by car.

Getting Around :
Compact Manchester is pretty foot-friendly, and you can hop on the Centreline No 4 bus and travel around the heart of the city to your heart's content for free. Hop on another bus, however, and you'll have to unravel the deregulated bus system's range of services and fares. Confusing! The city's bus hub is Piccadilly Gardens. Trains circle the inner city, with stops at Victoria, Salford, Deansgate, Oxford Rd and Piccadilly. Metrolink trams cut a swathe through the city, linking Victoria and Piccadilly with Castlefield, via Mosley St, and heading out to suburban Altrincham and Bury. Day Saver tickets are available for a range of bus, train and Metrolink combinations.
