| Brussels has more than its
fair share of special events. The tourist office can give you a complete
list. Some highlights include the International Cartoon & Animated
Film Festival, the Valentine's Day weekend Chocolate Passion Fair and
Carnival, all held in February; the summer solstice spectacular of Ommegang,
celebrating the annual migration of the Virgin Mary from Antwerpen to
Brussels; August's Tapis des Fleurs, when the Grand Place is carpeted
with flowers; and March? de No?l, a market that envelopes downtown Brussels
in the weeks preceding Christmas. Belgium also opens a handful of its protected monuments on selected weekends in September for Heritage Days. Different historic buildings are chosen each year, attracting thousands of Belgians and tourists alike. Sites in Brussels are usually opened the third weekend in September.
